Luca Mars Sweeps VP Racing Challenge GSX at VIR
AUGUST 25, 2024

Luca Mars extended his lead in the 2024 IMSA VP Racing Challenge Series GSX class to what is likely an insurmountable gap, thanks to back-to-back wins during the August 24-25 weekend at Virginia International Raceway in the the No.59 KohR Motorsports S650 Ford Mustang GT4 on Forgeline one piece forged monoblock GS1R wheels.
Luca qualified on the pole position for the start of Saturday's race. Once underway, he immediately built a comfortable nine second lead over the rest of the field within the first ten minutes of racing. A full-course caution at the ten minute mark bunched up the field again behind him, but at the restart, Luca went to work and had rebuilt his lead to 45 seconds and finished a full scoring lap ahead of the second place car. His win on Saturday was his fourth win of the 2024 season and guaranteed him another pole position for the start of the next race on Sunday.
After starting on the pole again on Sunday, Luca cruised to another big lead, putting 50 seconds on the second place car, before a full course caution once again bunched up the field with under nine minutes of racing remaining. At the restart, he quickly rebuilt his lead to a 4.5-second gap and captured the checkered flag to secure his fifth VP Racing Challenge GSX class win of the 2024 season. His 550 point lead over Patrick Wilmot and the No.88 Split Decision Motorsports BMW M4 GT4 means that Luca just needs to start the last two races in order to win the championship.
The last two races the 2024 VP Racing Challenge season take place at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta as part of the October 9-11 Motul Petit Le Mans weekend.
“We knew we had a really good car coming into the weekend; we’ve just been getting better and better,” Luca said. “Went out there and built an early lead again. The late-race caution kind of pulled the field together, but I knew with my speed I was going to be able to stretch that out again. I was able to keep the lead, get back-to-back wins and pretty much clinch the championship, so really happy with how the weekend’s going.”
