IMSA debuted the brand new VP Racing SportsCar Challenge racing series, during the Roar Before the 24 weekend at Daytona International Speedway, during the January 21-22 weekend. And Billy Griffin made an impressive IMSA debut, winning BOTH VP Racing SportsCar Challenge GSX class races, in his #14 Kohr Motorsports Ford Mustang GT4 on Forgeline one piece forged monoblock GS1R wheels.
Billy started both races on the pole position. But overly-aggressive driving at the front of the field from some of the other cars in the 45 minute sprint races briefly moved Billy out of the lead. Rather than get caught up in the mayhem, Billy opted to be patient and watch the drama unfold from a safe distance. As the leaders eventually ran into trouble, Billy seized the opportunities to regain the lead and then held on to claim the checkered flag.
“I made the move, it worked … and I was able to check away,” Billy recounted. “It’s an amazing feeling; thrilled to death. Definitely a lifelong dream come true.”
Television coverage of the VP Racing Challenge races at Daytona will air on CNBC at 11:30AM (Race 1) and 12:30PM ET (Race 2) on Saturday, January 28. The VP Racing Challenge series returns to action on March 11-12 at Sebring International Raceway.
